It depends on your budget and the time you’re willing to devote to photography (mainly $$$)
The camera I got is great it’s a Canon PowerShot SX110 IS
    It’s great and user friendly.
    $300

I would recommend any of the nikon manual focus cameras…theyre cheap, well built and once you can work a manual and understand basic photography principles you can transfer them to any camera.

Nikon D40. It’s a cheaper pro-level amatuer camera. It’s still user friendly, but will all the features and settigns you need. Plus, when you decide you want to do more, you can just buy more lenses, instead of a new camera….

A P&S will only give you a run at learning how to compose your images. To learn how to control the exposures of your images using a combination of shutter speed, aperture, choice of film or sensor ISO, and lens, you will need a fully adjustable camera like a 35 mm SLR. Nikon and Canon 35 mm SLR’s with a standard lens costs less than $150 on craigslist.in a city near you. Then you can take a class in photography to give you a good headstart on learning and using your camera.

After you have a good grasp of photography, you will be ready to buy a DSLR.
