Other than for resizing or appending your EXIF data, everything should be done in the camera with minimal time spent in front of the computer. That is the job of pre-press and post production wizards … not shooters.
That said, Photoshop CS2 or CS3 is very helpful when batch appending your files with your copyright notice, contact information and keywords.
If you already have a PC, stay with the PC .. if Mac, stay with the Mac. Having to learn a new operating system at the same time you are hitting the books can be seriously counter productive.

As a professional photographer, there are 2 must have programs.
1) Photoshop (Current version CS3) – You should already have experience with this program from your schooling. This program will basically be your staple, you will use it for all your in depth image corrections and creative work. Most people think of photoshop as just a tool for correcting color and flaws in photos. However, as a photographer, you use it to create unique and outstanding imagery that you cannot produce from a camera alone.
2) Lightroom (PC/MAC) or Aperture (MAC) – Both of these are essentially the same, though I recommend Lightroom since it is an adobe product and interfaces much better with the adobe suite. In addition to allowing you to manage and store your photo collections, these programs allow you to quickly develop large amounts of pictures.
I am a professional photographer, and these are the 2 programs we use exclusively. To see how we use these programs, check out some of our work here:
