Expensive cameras isn’t really an issue. I mean, you can take pretty fantastic and riveting photos with even a small hand held camera.
Lessons is the best way to go if you want to be successful.. well, as a hobby. If you are really passionate about photography, go for it.
If you aren’t so passionate, it might be a bit difficult to learn because your mind is in the gutter.
Fashion photography is definitely difficult, because you have to sell an outfit or a hat or a glove or whatever. It’s not like cityscapes where there isn’t any live emotion.

Canon and Nikon is safe choice.

I’ve created website for photographers and had a chance to meet professional photographers. I can assure you professionals would recommend you Cannon.

For peace of mind start experimenting and gain experience.
Start simple by taking pictures outdoor with natural sunlight.
Anyway you’ll need software for picture manipulation.
You don’t need Photoshop to edit images.
Free tool like Picasa will do the job.

Later on when you’ll need to take shoots with additional lighting then consider attending classes.
