To be a fashion photographer you should know photography inside and out. I suggest going to an art college. Because photography comes before the fashion.

You have picked a very bad time to look at magazine work. For the past couple of years many previously successful magazine have been either shutting down or reducing staff. The current economic climate has not been good to them, people are not spending money on non essential things like magazines. This means that you have large numbers of very competent and very experienced photographers out of work.

To obtain a position when competing against people with a good CV and portfolio would be difficult. You will need at least a relevant degree, you will not get into a good media organisation without one.
