well it depends on how good of a photographer you are, honestly. not to be harsh at all, but if you’re not good, people aren’t going to pay for the pictures.
but if you are good, it’s not a bad idea. just maybe try focusing on ONE type of portrait for people. like sports pictures, baby/child pictures, etc. that will probably make people a little more sure of your business.
good luck! :]

You should try some kind of focus, like doing sports or wedding photos. Most people nowadays have a digital camera, and they don’t really need to pay someone for pictures of themselves. If you have a good eye for photography (maybe post some of your work and ask for opinions, but be prepared for criticism) you could try going to a high school sports game and taking pictures so that you’d have a portfolio to show people. You could ask coaches or parents of kids in youth sports if they want to purchase team photos. Also, make sure you’re well acquainted with the advanced features of your camera. It’s not always necessary, but if you’re going to charge people you should be familiar with things like Fstop and white balance, and how to do a manual focus, etc. (Putting the camera on auto doesn’t always work) as well as picture resolution, and printing quality. It is important to be able to know how to fix any exposure problems just in case. (Sorry if you already know all that!) You can probably find general info about it on wikipedia or if you do a google search about photography.
